The iconic red spiny rock lobster (kōura) has long been a staple of the Northland coastline, but as of April 1, 2026, the landscape of our local fishery is changing. In a significant move to replenish dwindling numbers and restore the health of our underwater ecosystems, the eastern portion of Northland’s CRA 1 fishery – and parts of CRA 2 – are now officially closed to all harvesting.
This total closure spans from Ohao Point (including Pārengarenga Harbour) all the way down to Cape Rodney in the Hauraki Gulf. For the next few years, this area is strictly “no-take” for everyone – both commercial and recreational fishers.
While the East Coast takes a well-deserved breather, the West Coast remains open, though with updated daily bag limits designed to ensure sustainability:
- Spiny Rock Lobster (CRA 1): Limit of two per person in open areas.
- Packhorse Rock Lobster (PHC 1): Limit of three per person nationwide.
Fisheries Officers will be active across the region this season. With fines reaching up to $100,000 and the potential seizure of vessels or gear, it has never been more important to “know before you go.” We encourage everyone to update their NZ Fishing Rules app and help us protect this precious resource. If you spot any suspicious activity, play your part by calling 0800 4 POACHER.
